Tips for riding your bike in the city.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Riding a bike in the city is not dangerous, as long as the ride is cautious and following the basic rules. Traffic follow predictable patterns and motorized drivers behaviour is almost always better than expected, they are concerned about not harming a ciclist.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Ride along the centre of your lane and earn respect.<\/strong>\u00a0A bike near the edge of the road make the drivers be tempted to pass, even if the distance between is not enough. Also a parked car could open the doors unexpectedly and bring down the ciclist.<\/li>\n
  • Ride on the right lane.<\/strong>\u00a0Cars are not warning to find a slow user on the left line (the fast one), and they get confused when they have to pass others on the right as it is not common. However, if you have to turn left, you better ride on the left in advance. If the right lane is busy ride on the next on the left.<\/li>\n
  • Ride on a straight line and be as predictable as you can, <\/strong>show your movements, turns and others with your arms. That is more important as it may seem. If you don’t know how to do it. Ask for advice in advance.<\/li>\n
  • On the road you must ride on the hard shoulder <\/strong>if it is clean.<\/li>\n
  • Ride at the proper speed. <\/strong>Adapt your ride to the speed on the street you are riding in, and, if possible, choose calm streets. When you ride on a pedestrian priority zone ride at the speed the pedestrians walk and bear in mind this priority. If there’s a high density of people, get down the bike and walk with the bike on your side.<\/li>\n
  • Look for a safe route.<\/strong>\u00a0A good itinerary through calm streets and bike paths is worth. Use a map to mark your route. Frecuently old towns and calm neighbourhoods give good opportunities.<\/li>\n
  • Let others see you at night. <\/strong>Use a white front light and a red rear light, as well as reflectors. Its convenient a light system powered with batteries or a dinamo with battery acumulator so the light keeps on when stopped.<\/li>\n
  • \u00a0Use a helmet if it makes you feel more safe. <\/strong>Yet, remember helmets do NOT\u00a0avoid accidents. A real safety is based on the use of active measures of protection, a moderate speed, high attention on ride, foreknow your own and others movements, mark your shunting,…<\/li>\n
  • Use a driving mirror<\/strong>, is a good item to increase your safety.<\/li>\n
  • Do NOT ride using headphones<\/strong>, its use will not let you control properly the traffic aroung you.<\/li>\n
  • Use a ding, <\/strong>lpedestrians may not listen us and can very often obstruct our way.<\/li>\n
  • When raining be even more careful. <\/strong>In that case easy can turn difficult and risky.<\/li>\n
  • Fasten your bike with a good padlock. <\/strong>In TAO we will provide a good one with no extra cost.<\/li>\n
  • Be sure to have a good insurance. <\/strong>A liability insurance can cover the possible damages you might cause to a third party. Ask for the cobertures on TAO bike liability insurance including in the price.<\/li>\n
  • Follow the traffic rules.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Keep your bike ready: <\/strong>brakes, gear shift, wheels, lights… A good manteinance of the bike brings more safety to the ride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    and over all…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Pay special attention when riding on the right you find a right turn. Some drivers may not show their right turn and block you getting you involved in a risky situation.<\/li>\n
    • <\/li>\n
    • Do not trust on the cars shunting till the end. Be always ready to use your breaks, specially when you ride next to a car. Bear in mind that, althought you might be right, when a crash takes place the bike always gets the worse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Do not drive to close to the parked cars. Cars on your left may not let you enough space if a parked car suddenly gets its door open. That is one of the reasons to ride on the centre of the lane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • On a roundabout, do as other vehicles do. If you are afraid to ride on, other vehicles could move you to the right. Unless you are getting out the roundabout on the first exit, use the centre lanes. If you are slower than the cars, they should adapt their speed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          • Be extremely cautious when traffic is intense. Don’t get trapped between lanes. Even if you are on the left line (or specially on the left lane), ride on the centre\u00a0of the lane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
